Sandakan Memorial

Sandakan Memorial Service

Each September a special memorial ceremony is held in Boyup Brook which honours those prisoners of war who lost their lives in the Borneo Death Marches in WWII. Boyup Brook has one of only a couple of Memorials in Australia that recognises the sacrifice made by this group. In October 2007 the Shire of Boyup Brook and the Municipal Council of Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia initiated between themselves a Memorandum of Understanding of Friendship.  This agreement continues to this day and aims to build a relationship based upon friendship and co-operation.

The Boyup Brook Shire Council in conjunction with the Lions Club of Boyup Brook partner with a Civic Reception for invited guests prior to the public Sandakan Memorial Ceremony held later that morning at 11.00 a.m. The Sandakan Memorial Ceremony is held on the second Tuesday in September annually and many people travel from Perth to attend the service.

The Blackwood Marathon is a unique event and has attracted many top athletes. The competitors enter this event in teams comprising of 5 members, or iron-men. A runner, a canoeist, a swimmer, an equestrian and a cyclist. The race begins in the town of Boyup Brook and finishes in Bridgetown after journeying around 60kms through some of Western Australia’s most picturesque countryside of the Blackwood River Valley.
